Huatulco 1-23-2008

David H and 3 friends headed down to Huatulco for 5 days of fishing. The trip started off rough when they missed a flight on the east coast, but they showed great persistence and stamina and did arrive finally in Huatulco after a 8 hour cab ride from Oaxaca. These gus were really hardcore and were not going to let anything get between them and their fishing trip. On day one they headed out in search of tuna armed with plenty of plugs and live bait. The final tally for the day was ---2 dorado in the box and 1 lost. Other than that not a thing showed up behind the boat, in front of the boat, or around the boat. For us this was heartbreaking since they had showed so much perseverence in just getting to Huatulco, but we had high hopes for the coming days. What unfolded over the next couple of days was for me a slow and horrible nightmare as the fishing and conditions only got worse. I kept wondering if the Captain and crew were lacking in some way, but was somewhat reassurred that this was just one of those fishing slumps that happens when the clients indicated the guys were working hard, and other boats that were out also had nothing to show for their trips. We worked inshore, offshore 30 miles and down the coast 30 miles and still could not find a fish. This is definitely not what we want to happen on our trips, but sometimes the ocean does not cooperate.
